In line with the THEMES+ Agenda of making Lagos the preferred destination for Tourism, Leisure and Business in Africa, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, in collaboration with Stagecraft Studios and Film Productions is set to present an epic movie, Kurunmi.

Commissioner for Tourism, Toke-Benson Awoyinka, speaking at a press briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Center, The Secretariat, Alusa, Ikeja, explained that partnering with the film’s production company is geared towards the ambition of the Sanwo-Olu administration to prevent African culture and traditions from going into extinction.

The stage play which has seventy-five casts in collaboration with other partners will be taken to the five divisions of the state from this week for the delights of residents.

The performance is set to take place at Alliance Francaise this June 13th and 14th and also at the Terra Kulture Arena on July 20th and 21st, 2024. We expect visitors from far and wide to join us for this spectacular event and be a part of the historical experience.

Kurunmi, written by the late Professor Ola Rotimi, explores the themes of collective political and military leadership, social change and development, responsible leadership, control and accountability in the African setting.

The Commissioner, who made this known at a news conference at Alausa, said Kurunmi would expose and awaken the consciousness of youths to the role of good leadership anywhere they find themselves.

Benson-Awoyinka also said the stage play speaks to the THEMES PLUS agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to revive and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Lagos and Africa.

In his remarks, the Director of the play, Oladapo Muyideen, popularly called Lala, commended the Lagos State government for supporting and funding the project for cultural rebirth, especially among the youths.

Highlighting the significance of arts and culture in promoting tourism and showcasing the state’s rich cultural heritage, Awoyinka said the play is an excellent representation of “our cultural wealth”, and encourages everyone to experience it.

“We know that the cultural rebirth and reorientation that we talk about can happen faster through entertainment and arts. Therefore, by attending this play, you will not only be entertained but also gain a deeper understanding of our rich cultural heritage. The talented cast, stunning costumes, and impressive set design will transport you to a world of wonder and awe.

“We support the production of Kúrunmí because we understand the inherent importance and value that it would bring to our society, especially the numerous Lagosians that would go out to watch the play on stage.
