Where does a construction worker earn the most in the United States?

Construction is one of the most in-demand industries in the United States when it comes to employment.

According to the June employment report shared by the Department of Labor, the U.S. economy added 206,000 jobs last month, and the industries that recorded the most job gains were government, health care, social assistance and construction.

In addition to being in high demand, construction workers earns an average wage higher than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. However, many labor rights activists have pointed out that it is not enough to compensate for the risks and physical work involved.

The salary of construction workers in the US

According to the most recent Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average annual salary of a construction worker in the United States is $49,280, while the national average hourly wage is $23.69.

At the federal level, the median salary for construction workers is $45,300 per year and $21.78 per hour. The median salary is the 50th percentile salary estimate: 50% of workers earn less than the median and 50% of workers earn more than the median.

Where does a construction worker earn the most in the USA?

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the states where construction workers are paid the most are the following:

  • Massachusetts
  • New Jersey
  • Illinois
  • Hawaii  
  • New York

In the case of Massachusetts, the average hourly wage is $32.59, while the average annual wage is $67,780. In New Jersey, the average salary is $32.35 per hour and $67,280 per year. Meanwhile, in Illinois, the median salary is $32.06 per hour and $66,670 per year.

In Hawaii, the average hourly wage for a construction worker is $31.52 and $65,570 a year and finally, in New York, the average hourly wage is $30.69 and $63,830 a year.
