Drug dealer kills man trying to rob him in Escambia County; 2 alleged accomplices arrested

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — A man was shot and killed Monday while trying to rob a drug dealer in Escambia County, according to the sheriff’s office.

Two of his alleged accomplices are now charged with his murder. The dealer who shot him is not being charged in the killing.

The incident happened Tuesday on the 100 block of Swallowtail Lane.

Demetrius Caesar, 24, and Meliyah Gordon, 22, are both charged with murder – a death occurring during the commission of a felony, as well as tampering with evidence.

According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, De’Andre English, 26, Caesar and Gordon went to meet Isaac Mitchell, 20, to buy marijuana from him.

Upon their arrival, Mitchell got into their vehicle.

“During the sale, De’Andre English pulled a gun on Mitchell in the attempt to rob him,” the sheriff’s office says in a release. “This led to a fight over the gun. During that fight, English was shot and killed. Caesar and Gordon fled the scene.”

English was pronounced dead on scene.

Bullets hit neighborhood resident Noah Reichmann’s car. He heard the gunshots and one of the victims banging on his front door.

“I opened the door, that’s when I see the body on my porch and you could clearly see the five shots,” Reichmann said. “Then the cop stepped inside. We spoke a little about it. I kind of had an anxiety attack. I wasn’t really able to get words out.”

Caesar and Gordon were both arrested Thursday night.

“At this time, we have not charged Isaac Mitchell, as he appears to have acted in self-defense while being robbed,” the sheriff’s office says in a release. “Drug charges related to drug sale are pending.”

Caesar and Gordon are being held in Escambia County Jail without bond.

Sheriff Chip Simmons explained their charges on Friday.

“In the state of Florida…if you’re in the commission of a felony and someone is killed during the commission of that felony, you can be charged with felony murder,” he said.

At the time of the incident, Caesar was on probation for being involved in a previous murder that occurred on June 27, 2018 in Oakwood Terrace. The victim in that case — an attempted robbery that resulted in a fatal shooting — was 18-year-old Abel Kane.

Vincent Winchester was sentenced to 50 years for Kane’s murder, while Kelijah Watson was sentenced to 25 years for his involvement. Caesar, meanwhile, was sentenced to four years in prison for his involvement and was released on probation in April 2023.

“I don’t get it,” Sheriff Simmons said. “You do this once and now you do it twice. Once is bad enough, but when you do it twice, it’s incomprehensible to me.”
